The Violets – Foreo (Angular Recording Corporation)

A needling scree of guitar. Voice like a fist full of scalpels. Drums kicking out a panic attack pulse. ‘Foreo’ is so urgent that listening to it makes your breathing shallow into tiny little gulps. It sounds like black painted corridors with single shade-less bulbs swinging crazily, alternating between casting dislocated shadows and shards of brightness.

The Violets manage to ratchet up the intensity and fierce glamour with each release and this homage to Hitchcock’s ‘Marnie’ is sharper than ever. It glitters cruelly, twisting its vicious angles just so in order to catch the light. Taught, powerful, no extraneous flesh on these bones, just precision built clamour.
