The Violets – Descend / Carnival (Angular Recording Corporation)

The Violets second single comes coyly swaddled in tissue paper; delicate packaging that belies the tautly assured artpunk clamour within. Lean cuts of controlled guitar noise smack up against one another whilst Alexis’ voice skates splinters of melody across the top. Elegantly, it takes ninety-nine seconds, including throwing the guitar on the floor.

Carnival – a Siouxsie-esque title to match the Banshee vocals – is a desiccated clatter down the back stairs riding on sparsely ringing guitar and tribal drumbeats before a satisfyingly whirling chorus fizzes up your nose. Hollow, claustrophobic, exhilarating.
